Christus Health Acquires Gerald Champion Hospital

On June 30, 2023, CHRISTUS Health acquired Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Gerald Champion is a 98-bed hospital serving South Central New Mexico. The hospital has 28 clinics providing primary and specialty care services in 33 medical and surgical specialties. Its 160 care providers and over 1,000 staff members serve 150,000 patients annually. The hospital admits 4,000 people and records 30,000 emergency room visits each year.

CHRISTUS Health is a healthcare system with over 600 hospitals and urgent care centers across Texas, New Mexico, and Louisiana. CHRISTUS Health also operates hospitals in Mexico, Colombia, and Chile. The healthcare system has over 15,000 physicians and 50,000 associates.

Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center spokesperson Lillie Lewis said the acquisition would give the hospital additional support, enabling expanded services and putting the hospital in a better financial position. CHRISTUS Health officials said the acquisition would allow Gerald Champion to use its expansive healthcare network and access funds to support capital improvements and employee recruitment and retention.
