Christus Health Launches Innovative Lung Cancer Diagnosis Tool

Christus Health Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi-Shoreline is the first hospital in Coastal Bend, Texas, to deploy the ion robotic navigational bronchoscopy tool to diagnose lung cancer. The new, minimally invasive option helps physicians detect lung cancer much earlier with far less risk of complications.

Part of the reason lung cancer is so deadly is that most people do not find out they have it until after it has spread. The ion robotic navigational bronchoscopy tool allows physicians to find precise biopsy masses deep in lung tissue, which is impossible with traditional tools. During the procedure, a surgeon inserts a catheter inside the patient’s mouth and directs it into the lungs, where it extracts a biopsy.

According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is the second most prevalent cancer in the United States, responsible for 20 percent of deaths in the country. The addition of the ion robotic navigational bronchoscopy tool underlies Christus Health’s commitment to technologically advanced care.
